Postcards! a celebration and exploration
with Ann Hudson
Part art, part letter, both private and public, delightfully brief but never simple, the postcard is quite simply a delight. For over 150 years people have been sending and receiving these little joy-bombs through the mail. In this class we’ll make our own postcards with photos, collage, or drawing materials and mail them to a lucky friend. Along the way, we’ll look at some old postcards, think about how we could use postcards to make other art objects, and celebrate this lovely and vanishing art form.
Open Studio: Writers Block
with Hive Staff
OPEN STUDIOS
Our Open Studio sessions offer you dedicated time and space to work on your book arts projects. You get to choose what you’re going to work on during each two-hour block, and you can help yourself to a small assortment of snacks, coffee, tea, and sparkle water.
These sessions are non-instructional time, meaning you work independently but in community with others.
Sign up for a single session or a whole bunch!
Open Studio: Writer’s Block
Make time for your writing. We’ll spend a few minutes getting to know each other, and then we’ll spend the rest of the time in silent writing time together. We don’t share what we’ve worked on, but we do support each other in the work.
Ooh La La: French Link Binding
with Jamie Thome
Elegant, stylish, and great with a lovely baguette, this bookbinding stitch is a fan favorite! It looks complex, but at its core is quite simple, once you get the feel of it under your fingertips. Over the four weeks we'll have a chance to make several books with this exposed stitch -- great for just-starting-out- and experienced-bookbinders alike!
Papermaking
with Jamie Thome
Papermaking is an ancient art with seemingly endless variations and adaptations. At its heart, papermaking involves mixing plant fibers, recycled paper, or other materials with water to make pulp, using a mold and deckle to catch fibers on the screen, and drying/pressing those fibers to make a sheet of paper. You'll come away from this class with a new appreciation of paper and its variants, as well as several sheets of paper to use in your next bookbinding project.... or however you wish!
Note that this is a weather-dependent class. If we need to cancel, your registration fee will be either fully refunded, or credited toward a future class.
Work-in-Progress Feedback Group
with Leah Mayers
Do you have a creative project you’d like to workshop? Join a small group of writers and artists exploring what happens when art meets its audience. We meet regularly — you can register for all sessions or just a few. In order to give deep and detailed feedback, we limit the number of presenter spots in each session, but anyone can join to be a responder. When it’s your turn to present, bring a piece of visual art, music, writing…. any creative project you are working on, and the group will reflect on and ask meaningful questions of the work you’ve presented. Trust us: good feedback doesn’t have to be hollow, brutal, or boring. You’ll leave with greater clarity on your work, and a renewed enthusiasm to continue working on it. Open to everyone.
